Kita Kamakura Station Exit

The Gateway: Kita~Kamakura Station

Our journey begins at the atmospheric Kita-Kamakura Station. Away from the coastal crowds, we breathe in the quiet mountain air and set the pace for an adventure through the heart of samurai history.

Ancient Foundations: Engakuji

Engakuji

We visit the grand sub-temple of Engaku-ji. Among moss-covered stone steps and hidden caves, there is a quiet feeling of stepping back in time. Surrounded by centuries of history and the calm atmosphere of Kita-Kamakura, it is the perfect place to slow down and prepare for the journey ahead.

Jochi-ji

As our route winds down from the forest ridges, we reach Zeniarai Benzaiten Ugafuku Shrine, one of Kamakura’s most unusual hidden spots. Here, surrounded by rock walls and flowing spring water, visitors can take part in the local tradition of washing money for good luck and prosperity.

Spiritual Wealth: Zeniarai Benten

"From Jōchi-ji, we begin a rewarding 40–50 minute hike through Kamakura’s wooded hills. Following forest ridges and paths lined with exposed roots, we gradually climb toward Kuzuharaoka Shrine, where we pause to pay respects at the statue of Minamoto no Yoritomo, the founder of Japan’s first samurai government."

The Monumental End: Kotoku-in

As our morning journey draws to a close, we arrive at the iconic Great Buddha of Kamakura. Rising beneath the open sky, the 11-meter bronze statue appears almost unexpectedly. For over 750 years, this quiet giant has watched over Kamakura, enduring typhoons, earthquakes, and the passing of countless generations. After a morning of trails and discovery, there could be no more fitting end to the journey
