I'm Darren— a British resident.I've called Kamakura home for over two decades.

Before this, I was working as a tour guide in Spain. After our second child was born, my wife and I decided to move back to Japan — and rather than settle anywhere, we chose to raise our kids by the ocean. Kamakura won.

I didn't move here for the guidebook version of Japan. I moved here for the version that's harder to find: the narrow lane behind the temple with no sign, the shrine steps locals use as a shortcut, the café that's never once shown up in a "Top 10 Kamakura" article.

Just Passing Through Japan started because I kept bringing friends and visitors along on the walks I already do for myself — and their reaction was always the same:
"Why isn't this the tour everyone takes?"

So now it is. A small, private walk through the Kamakura I actually know — its temples, its coastal paths, its quiet corners, and the stories behind them. No script, no rushing between photo stops, no group of twenty strangers. Just you, me, and a day that feels like it belongs to you.
